Misconceptions of obesity are staggering.
Obesity is the most serious health threat we face in America, yet we lack competent effective healthcare providers to address this condition. Myths and misconceptions about obesity are abundant, while access to proper care and treatment is scarce. ‘The promulgation of unsupported beliefs might yield poorly informed clinical decisions, inaccurate public health recommendations, and unproductive allocation of limited research resources’. ~ New England Journal of Medicine. Even though two-thirds of adults and nearly one-third of children struggle with overweight and obesity, doctors have little to no training on how to address a patient and how to treat it, because it is not addressed at all in medical school.
Through educating more doctors on the subject, maybe and just maybe we can curb this pandemic. We were proud to produce a documentary video with American Board of Obesity Medicine promoting a healthier well being and understanding of this horrible disease. The American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) was formed to begin to take a stand on Obesity by requiring doctors to go through rigorous training and get board certified in Obesity medicine.
ABOM serves the public and the field of obesity medicine by maintaining standards for assessment and credentialing physicians. An obesity medicine physician is a physician with expertise in the sub-specialty of obesity medicine. This sub-specialty requires competency in, and a thorough understanding of the treatment of obesity and the genetic, biologic, environmental, social, and behavioral factors that contribute to obesity.
Be kind and be the change you wish to see.
